You Have Tried
The Multi-Bladed Razors

Did they work?

Have You Tried A
Women's Safety Razor?

What is the difference between a safety razor for women, and a safety razor for men? Nothing. They are the same razor. No pink tax. No plastic pastels. Just a good shave.

Isn’t that a novel idea?

Do You Get Skin Irritation After Shaving?

Do you have sensitive skin? Do you get razor bumps or razor burn after shaving your sensitive areas or high friction areas like your armpits? Could it be the multiple blades?

Safety Razors vs. Cartridge Razors

Safety Razor vs Cartridge Razor - Our Wet Shaving Club opinion

If you’re reading this, there’s a good chance you’re someone who shaves or has shaved. There’s also a good chance that you learned how to shave on and still use a cartridge razor.

Like many people, the commercials fed to you by Big Razor made you feel like these multi-edged proprietary blades were your only option in the war against stubble. The slick graphics of blade after blade slicing away at a single hair follicle probably convinced you that the shave you were getting was the best you could possibly have. However, the exorbitant cost per blade, the unrecycled cartridges and the skin irritation have led many to question their morning routine, and look for better options when it comes to a better face de-fuzzer.

There’s a veritable shave-naissance going on around the world, as many are ditching their cartridge razors for something new. Interestingly, they’re not picking up some new fancy gadget that’s on the forefront of technology. But rather looking to the past. What they’ve discovered is a classic piece of grooming kit that has refused to retire – the safety razor. Coming to prominence at the turn of the 20th Century, safety razors made daily shaving affordable for the common man. Who until that point was often reliant on his local barber to keep his face smooth. Safety razors were a hit, and became a must-have for men (and women!).

Enter The Cartridge Razor

This would change around the 1970s, when cartridge razors made their way onto the shaving scene. Through extensive marketing campaigns on the part of major razor companies, by the turn of the Millennium cartridge razors had pretty much taken over the shaving market.

But does their popularity make them better? And when it comes to safety razors vs. cartridge razors, which one is better? If you’ve taken even a brief look at our store, it should be pretty obvious which side we’re on. We’re team safety razor all the way. They’re far more economical, environmentally friendly, and give what we believe is a closer and less irritating shave compared to their cartridge counterparts. On the more subjective side, they exude old school cool and classical manliness. Plus, paired with shaving soap they can turn your generic shaving routine into a confidence-boosting morning ritual.

We’ve clearly laid our bias out there, but we don’t just expect you to just take our word for it (although we wouldn’t mind if you did). In this article we’re going to compare the qualities of both kinds of razors, explore their pros and cons, and ultimately show that in the battle of safety razors vs. cartridge razors, safety razors are clearly the superior choice.

8 Safety Razor Myths

1. More Blades = Closer Shave

how many blades does your razor need

How could only one blade give you a close shave? Surely you need more! After all, you need more than one blade on an axe, a scalpel, and a steak knife, right?

Let’s end this safety razor myth for good. It’s not about the number of blades – it’s about the angle. One safety razor at the correct angle is going to give you a shave so smooth your face will be a slipping hazard. Those multiple cartridge razors make contact with your skin at different angles, meaning they’re not all cutting hair at the one that actually gives you a smooth shave. All this does is cause irritation, and there’s nothing smooth about razor bumps.

2. Shaving With A Safety Razor Takes Too Long

Clean face, apply shaving soap/cream, shave, rinse, apply aftershave. Are we talking about cartridge shaving or shaving with a safety razor? Exactly. It’s basically the same process, except the safety razor is going to give you way less irritation. For those who are new to shaving with a safety razor, there is a slight learning curve that might slow you down a little at first (check out our article on how to shave with a safety razor). However, with a little practice, you’ll be a safety razor pro in no time, and you’ll see very little change to your morning routine time-wise. Don’t let this safety razor myth hold you back!

You Need A Safety Razor

Shaving. The morning trim, a touchup before a big date, or a quick beard snip to convince your partner to kiss you again—all of these encompass a ritual that’s both universal and personal. Whether we’re talking ancient Egypt with seashells or 2020 with battery operated vibrating blades, shaving feels as routine as breathing. There are many ways to achieve the perfect shave, but what do you use? Straight razor, safety razor, battery-operated, cartridge, seashell?

All of these work (kudos for using seashells), but one stands out as a wonderful blend of old and new: The safety razor. Why? Before I make the case for it, let’s cover a little shave history.

Ye Old Razor

Back in ye olden days, excess hair was considered dangerous for many reasons: The person could catch pathogens in their hair, enemies could yank on it during battles, and bacteria could hitch a ride from a beard to a crop, something that could devastate a village. Thus, everyone benefitted from keeping their hair in check. How did they do it? Many would use clam shells to pluck the hairs, while others used seashells and oyster shards to shave, and those two methods remained for thousands of years.

FAQ & Other
Safety Razor Info

The first safety razors were introduced in the United States in 1880. These early safety razors were one-sided and resembled a tiny hoe, and they had a steel guard along one edge to help protect from cuts. Then, in 1895, King C. Gillette introduced his own version of the safety razor, with the main difference being the introduction of a disposable, double-edged razor blade. Gilette’s blades were cheap, so cheap in fact that it was often more expensive to try to maintain the blades of the old safety razors than it was to buy new Gilette blades.

  • A more cost effective way to shave
  • No patronizing “girly colors”

There are plenty of great choices when it comes to your first safety razor.  We recommend you checking out our Super Safe Safety Razor or our ‘Merica Razor

The short answer is no! In fact, a good double edged safety razor with a quality blade can help reduce the irritation that you might receive with some of the multi-bladed cartridge razors out there.
