It feels like a cartridge razor world out there. From pretty much everything sold by Big Razor to the most popular shave clubs, it seems like everyone is trying to get you to shave using something with multiple blades and plastic. And they’re charging a pretty penny for them.
But you know better. That’s why you’re here, right? You know that shaving with a classic double edge safety razor can give you a closer shave, less irritation while being better for the environment and easier on your wallet. You’re in good company. We figured this out too and it’s the reason why those are the razors we sell.
But, as much as we’d like to think that we’re the only shave club who knew about how awesome safety razors are, that would be a little naïve. Indeed, when it comes to that classic shave we aren’t the only game in town.
In this article, we’re going to see how we stack up against Bevel – another online seller of classic safety razors. Started in 2013, Bevel’s mission is to meet the shaving and grooming needs of African American men. As with our other comparison articles, we’re only going to be focus on razor and blade offerings.
Like Highlander, when it comes to the best double edge razor club there can only be one. Let’s dive into Bevel vs. Wet Shaving Club!
A pet peeve we have with a lot of shave clubs is the hoops they make you jump through to get started with their shave system. Between annoying questionnaires and constant upselling, simply buying a razor and blades can be a hassle (we’re looking at you, Dollar Shave Club and Harry’s).
As always, getting started with a razor and blades with Wet Shaving Club is a breeze. Pick your safety razor, check out and you’re all set for a year of shaving. We don’t believe in intrusive upselling – we want you to have the shave you want on your terms.
But what about Bevel? Although not as hard as some other shave clubs, just buying a razor and blades is not as straightforward as going with us. They REALLY want you to buy their shave kit, which on top of a razor, brush and blades includes shave oil, cream and post-shave balm. The default option for this kit signs you up for recurring shipments of everything except the razor and brush (and is pretty pricey).
If you buy their safety razor separately, you can’t simply add the blades like you can with us. In fact, there’s only an option to add their entire starter bundle. Although the handle comes with five on its own, to get additional blades you need to add them to your cart separately.
We also need to point out that Bevel’s page for razor blades at the time of writing is very unclear about how many you’re actually buying. Nothing in the text tells you the exact number (someone over there might want to fix that), and the images make it seem that it’s 10 blades per order. However, if you look at their FAQ, it’s actually 20. With us, you know exactly what you’re buying, no sleuthing required.
Comparing getting started with Bevel vs. Wet Shaving Club is pretty easy – it’s far simpler getting started with us.
Shave Game Recognizing Shave Game
Normally at this part of a shave club comparison article, we talk about how we believe cartridge razors are inferior to double edge safety razors. From the multiple blades causing more irritation to increasing the likelihood of getting an ingrown hair, we don’t think it’s the best choice for a great shave. Plus, the cartridges themselves are extremely difficult to recycle given that they’re made with plastic.
But we can’t do that here, because Bevel also sells double edge safety razors. Reading their website, this was a deliberate choice. African American men’s facial hair tends to be course and curly, making it more prone to becoming ingrown – especially with cartridge razors. Bevel, like us, knows that classic safety razors are the way to go when it comes to an irritation-free shave that reduces ingrown facial hair. They also know that safety razor shaving is way better for the environment.
Despite not having had a chance to try their razor ourselves, we don’t see any reason why you wouldn’t get a great shave with it. The Bevel safety razor is made with solid brass, and will likely give you the classic wet shave you’re looking for. Our safety razors are all-metal as well, and we can definitely vouch for the quality of their shave.
When it comes to the razor and shave quality of Bevel vs. Wet Shaving Club, we’re going to have to call this round a resounding tie.
A wise man once said that a great shave is made even greater when it comes at the best price (OK, we’re not sure a wise man ever said that, but if there are any wise men reading, feel free to say this to make it true).
One of the greatest advantages to shaving with a classic safety razor is that it’s far less expensive over time than cartridges. Intuitively, you’d think that two companies selling similar products would cost about the same over two years. But is that the case here?
Let’s start with Bevel. They keep things simple by only selling one kind of razor for $49.95. Their blades cost $9.95 for a pack of 20. They’re cheaper if you get a subscription, but since Bevel doesn’t appear to have free shipping that option would likely cost more.
So how much will you pay with Bevel over two years?
One Year – $79.80
Two Years – $109.65
Although that’s way less expensive than most cartridge razors, it’s not quite as easy on the wallet as Wet Shaving Club. A big part of this is the fact that our blades cost far less (100 for $10). So what will we cost you?
Two Years with our Retro Safety Razor – $34
Two Years with our Super Safe Safety Razor – $50
Two Years with our ‘Merica Safety Razor – $100
As you can see, all our razor offers will cost you less over two years. Oh, and we offer free shipping on all orders.
When it comes to the price of Bevel vs. Wet Shaving Club, your back account will thank you for going with us.
The battle of Bevel vs. Wet Shaving Club was close, but there has to be a winner. Despite offering a great safety razor that will probably give you a better shave than cartridge razors, Bevel isn’t going to give you as good a razor buying experience as us. Getting a simple razor and blades is far trickier with Bevel, and you’re going to end up paying more on blades.
